Team up with dedicated volunteers who helped 1385 taxpayers claim $2.66 million in refunds last year. An hour of your time can put $1895 into a hard-working family's pocket.
Tax season 2018 runs from Saturday, January 27 until Tuesday, April 17.
Attend one new volunteer orientation at Community Action Duluth, 2424 West 5th Street, Suite 102, 5:00-6:00 pm on MON 12/11/17, THU 12/14/17, or TUE 1/2/18.
To register, please e-mail julia@communityactionduluth.org or call (218) 726-1665, ext. 225. Pre-registration is appreciated but drop-in attendance is welcome.
The volunteer commitment includes about 15-20 hours of training to certify as a tax preparer and one clinic shift per week during the 12-week 2018 tax season. Volunteers learn a lot about taxes and gain resume-building experience. Volunteer service may qualify you for academic credit or continuing education units.
You’ll prepare federal income tax, state income tax and/or Minnesota property tax returns for Minnesotans (and a few Wisconsin residents), using cloud-based software. Tax experience is helpful but not required. All training in volunteer standards of conduct, tax law, and tax prep software is provided.
We also provide a light dinner on clinic nights, snacks on Saturday and a 100% cotton Tax Site t-shirt.
We emphasize refundable tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), considered the best anti-poverty measure ever enacted by Congress. A tax site coordinator and experienced volunteers mentor you and review your work. Volunteer preparers train through classroom lectures, open practice labs and online learning at http://apps.irs.gov/app/vita/. Preparers must pass the IRS certification test. The test is open book and may be taken online or on paper.
All Free Tax Site clinics take place at Community Action Duluth.
Shifts are available MON 4:30-9:00 pm, TUE 4:30-9:00 pm, and/or SAT 8:30 am - 1:00 pm.
Tax preparer classroom training begins with Federal Tax Law on Jan. 3, 2018. (Optional) Tax Basics for Beginners is Jan. 2, 2018. Tax preparers also train in Minnesota state tax law and TaxSlayer Pro Online software.
