Needs From: Head of the Lakes United Way

Girls on the Run teams from all around Duluth and Northern Minnesota will join us at for our joy-filled Fall 5K event on Saturday, November 7, 2026. Each season comes to an end with a celebratory 5K. This closing event gives program participants of all abilities a tangible sense of accomplishment. Crossing the finish line instills confidence through completion and is a joyful moment program participants always remember! Everyone in our program receives a commemorative medal to celebrate this incredible achievement. We need volunteers to help with setup and takedown, course marshals along the course to give directions, ensure safety and cheer our participants!

Volunteers are needed to help with set-up, serving food, running activity stations and clean-up.  Join us for this great community building event!  BBQ dinner included for all volunteers so come hungry.  Minimum age to volt is 13.

Food for good! The Lake Superior YMCA is assisting with community food distribution through food bags. We need help packing the food bags, distributing food, and breaking down boxes. There isn't a minimum age to volunteer, however, youth under 13 must have an adult present.
When: Thursday July 30 from 9:00-11:30 a.m.
Where: Superior YMCA

Help organize and distribute food boxes to people in need of extra food!  The boxes have already been packed so we're looking for volunteers to help greet people, hand out boxes and potentially help people bring the food out to their cars if needed.

AEOA Meals on Wheels is looking for volunteers in the Duluth area to pick up meals from the kitchen around 10:00am M-F and deliver them to 3 apartment complexes in Duluth. The meals are distributed by residents at each building.

Mileage reimbursement available up to $20.00 per month.

AEOA Meals on Wheels is looking for a volunteer to pick up meals from the Duluth kitchen around 10:00am daily and deliver them to the Proctor Community Center where they will be picked up by other volunteers for distribution. This position could be shared between more than one person.

An excellent group volunteer opportunity!
The Miracle League is a program that provides youth ages 4-19 and adult with disabilities, an opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league. The Miracle League believes “Every Child Deserves a Chance to Play Baseball.” Volunteers are mainly needed to serve as buddies for players in the program. Buddies assist Miracle League players so it could be anything from helping them at bat, get from base to base or even just cheering them on. Volunteers can also help with pitching & catching. Minimum age to volunteer is 8 (youth ages 8-11 must have an adult present).
Program Site: Miracle League Field (located in Harrison Park in West Duluth)
League Dates: Saturdays from now-August 8. Volunteers are needed from 9:40-11:00 a.m

This program has been designed to help staff, volunteers, and students engage with one another, identify goals and reach outcomes so at the beginning of the new school year there is an understanding of what's going on, a sense of comfort, and respect between both the staff and students. Having volunteers involved and becoming a part of the process is an important part of the students' learning and we look forward to working with interested volunteers. Our volunteers really allow these programs to be successful.

Tutor students after school at Denfeld High School or come Volunteer with fun activites f or the up coming School Year!!! 2026-2027 

As a volunteer, you will support us in maintaining DASH (Denfeld After School Happenings), an after-school program for high schoolers meant to provide a safe space to study, access tutors, and participate in activities.

DASH runs on Mondays - Thursday 3:30-5:30 in the Media Center at Denfeld High School. 

We especially need tutors who can consistently attend DASH for at least one day week-to-week. This is important because tutoring is most beneficial to students when they see the same tutors every week and can build relationships with those tutors. Tutors for all subject areas are welcome! Math and chemistry are especially desired. You do not need tutoring experience to volunteer with us.

Give & Get is a Saturday event that is open to the public at all of our office locations. This is for community members that may not have the ability to utilize our Donated Equipment Program during weekday hours.

This event gives a second life to gently used durable medical equipment. With the help of on-site volunteers the day of, each item will be cleaned and refurbished for someone in need, completely free of charge. What might otherwise go unused now helps support safety, mobility, and independence for individuals across Minnesota.

At our Duluth office (4815 Burning Tree Rd, Suite 200), we are looking for volunteers that can assist with cleaning equipment and making minor repairs to ensure it's in great shape for the next community member who needs it.

Freedom Fridays, held on the last Friday of each month, brings together community members for an evening of connection, learning, and empowerment. Open to all, these gatherings create a welcoming space for neighbors of all backgrounds to engage in cross-generational dialogue and celebrate cultural exchange.

For July's Freedom Friday we are hosting a BBQ! Volunteers are needed to help setting up tables and tents, serving elders, interacting with youth and cleaning up.

This is a wonderful opportunity to create hope, strength and joy for a child with a critical illness! Wish granters sign up to grant the wish of a child in their area, meet the child and their family, help the child determine their top wish ideas, and then stay in contact to keep their spirits up while staff work on the logistics of the wish! Wish granting volunteers work in teams of two or three to plan and help fulfill each wish and have the opportunity to make the wish as unique as each child. Wish granters also act as the liaison between the family and the Foundation and assist in seeking in-kind donations of goods for the child’s wish.

Chop, chop, goodbye buckthorn! Buckthorn is an invasive species and is overgrowing our native plants on the Ecolibrium3 Urban Farm. We are seeking volunteers to help us remove buckthorn from our fungi forest and restore the native habitat.

Zeitgeist is hosting the 4th annual Hillside Night Out again this year at the JS Print/Freedom Farm property on Tuesday Aug 4th from 5:00-7:30pm (flier attached for a sneak preview). The family-friendly event features food from the Whole Foods Coop, ice cream from Love Creamery, live DJ, bike activities and free tune-ups (bring your bike!), and a chance to celebrate and provide input on the community-led changes on 6th Ave E. Head of the Lakes United Way is looking for volunteers to assist with our annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive by picking up donated school supplies from local businesses and delivering them to our office.

As a Donation Pickup Volunteer, you'll help ensure the generosity of our community reaches local students by transporting donations from collection sites around the region to Head of the Lakes United Way at 314 W. Superior St., Suite 750, Duluth, MN 55802.

We are looking for volunteer help for summer and winter programming. Calling all individuals who would love to volunteer their time to  mentoring, tutoring in reading and math, or simply just show up and spend time engaging with youth during programming.

Summer volunteer hours are from 10:30 AM-4:30 PM 

Winter Hours are 2:30 PM-7:00 PM

This requires helping with the youth activities daily and organizer

At ConnectAbility of MN, our Donated Equipment Program gives a second life to gently used mobility and medical equipment. This free program supports individuals in financial need by providing the tools they need to live more independently.

We are looking for volunteers to help with intake, cleaning, and minor repairs of the durable medical equipment donated to ensure it's in the best shape to then donate out to a community member that needs it, at no cost! Examples of work include wiping down wheelchairs, swapping walker legs, replacing rollator breaks, and removing duct tape and stickers.

We can suggest where to look for free or inexpensive books, or if you already have some, you can share those too. You can find book-sharing boxes near you using our world map or free mobile app. Volunteers over 18 anywhere in the U.S. where there are Little Free Libraries can register for this opportunity.

Once you sign up, you will get access to tips & resources that you review independently online. Our Little Free Library staff can answer your questions by email. You can share books whenever it works for you.

Communities are hungry for books! Help Little Free Library fulfill its mission of book access for everyone by coordinating a local book drive. You can lead a book drive and distributed the collected books to local Little Free Libraries. Little Free Library staff can answer your questions along the way. 

This is a flexible volunteer opportunity. You can coordinate your book drive during the times that work best for you and your community. Volunteers over 18 anywhere in the U.S. where there are Little Free Libraries can register for this opportunity.

How to get started: Register on our website. If it's your first time volunteering with Team LFL, you will be asked to create an account in our volunteer hub. After you register, we will send you a guide about how to coordinate a book drive. Then, staff will check in with you by email to offer support for your book drive planning.

Help seniors stay connected to the healthcare, services, and independence they deserve. As a Transportation Dispatch Assistant, you'll support our transportation program by helping to schedule rides in our computer system for older adults throughout our community.

Volunteers assist with answering phones, scheduling appointments, confirming ride requests, communicating with drivers, and providing friendly customer service to seniors and caregivers. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, basic computer knowledge, and a compassionate attitude are helpful. Training is provided.

This volunteer opportunity is ideal for someone who enjoys problem-solving, staying organized, and making a meaningful difference behind the scenes.

Your support helps ensure seniors can safely access medical appointments, grocery stores, senior meal sites, and other essential destinations.

When Mary lost her husband, she also lost her only ride to her doctor’s appointments. That is, until Tom volunteered to drive her. Now, every other Tuesday morning, they chat about family, gardening, and the latest local news on the way to her cancer treatments. For Mary, it’s more than transportation—it’s friendship and independence. For Tom, it’s the best part of his week.

Our Volunteer Driver Program depends on caring individuals like Tom. Volunteer drivers provide non-emergency rides for seniors and adults with disabilities—helping them get to medical appointments and back home safely. Each trip helps someone stay healthy, connected, and independent.

Each ride is more than just a trip; it’s a lifeline that helps clients stay connected to their doctors, their community, and their independence.

Volunteers choose how often they drive—once a week, once a month, or on call—and assignments are typically just part of a day (morning or afternoon). We work with your schedule and offer a mileage stipend. Some trips are shorter in Ashland County, others are longer - to Duluth or Ironwood.

Take Jim, for example—a volunteer who delivers in Ashland. Every Wednesday, he knocks on Mrs. Anderson’s door with her favorite chicken dinner and a big smile. The Red Cross is looking or individuals to fill the overnight and weekend shifts for Disaster Dispatch. The Red Cross response is a team effort and Disaster Dispatch is the vital link between the Red Cross and local first responders. Red Cross: Disaster Client Casework & Recovery (Ashland and Bayfield Counties)

Work within the Disaster Cycle Services Department answering phones, providing follow-up casework with disaster clients, dispatching responders on disaster calls, and assisting with office tasks.

You will have the opportunity to train for and deploy on national relief operations.

The Red Cross is looking for an individual who is able to assist disaster clients, to utilize their own spiritual resources, values and faith in the midst of crisis, regardless of one's faith tradition. Disaster Action Team: While big hurricanes and wildfires get the most news coverage, smaller disasters are no less devastating to the families affected. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can help comfort and support people in your community by meeting any immediate needs such as food, shelter, clothing or supplies and connecting them to long term recovery services. Be part of our work to help save millions of lives each year by volunteering as a blood donor ambassador and welcoming donors who give the gift of life.

Blood donor ambassadors welcome donors to blood drives and provide friendly support before and after they give. This can include helping donors to register, answering their questions and assisting them at the refreshments table.

Come join the 3rd annual Park Point Beach Cleanup 9/11 Day of Service on Saturday, September 12th, 2026.  This community service event honors those we lost and those who selflessly served on September 11th, 2001. Owen Fifield, the Disaster Program Manager with American Red Cross of Northern and Central MN will speak on "Our First Responders--Selfless Heroes" at 10am.  This volunteer opportunity is suitable for ALL ages.  Bags and gloves are provided.  A free lunch will be offered after the cleanup, at about noon.

Myers Wilkins Elementaey school needs Oaki Suit washers

DCSC has provided Oaki snowsuits for our students at Myers Wilkins. During the summer we wash them all and need volunteers that are willing to come grab a few boxes of them, wash them in there machines at home and then drop them off back at the school once dry..

If I had a group of folks we could do some of them at the school together just laying them on the lawn scrubbing them in side and out and then rising them- let them air dry.

Times- Flexable, if your picking them up you can come and go whenever between 9 and 1 (summer hours of school), M-F.... If we had a group, we could do a morning form like 10-12 fairly flexable - would need to chit chat with group leader to nail done logistics... We could find a time with our staff at MW that works for everyone. Food for good!  The YMCA is assisting with community food distribution through Family Meal Kits.  Each meal kit includes two healthy recipes and all the ingredients needed for a family of 4 to make 2 complete meals.  We need help packing, distributing food and breaking down boxes.  We can take a max of 2 volunteers for this opportunity each week.  There isn’t a minimum age to volunteer but youth under age 12 must have an adult present.

Our Gentiva Hospice team in Duluth MN is looking for a compassionate volunteer to assist one or two patients in maintaining their independence at home. This role involves light homemaking tasks once a week, such as helping with laundry, taking out the garbage, getting the mail, etc.

For many patients, staying at home as their care needs increase is deeply meaningful. It allows them to remain in familiar surroundings, preserve daily routines, and maintain a sense of dignity and control. While family caregivers often provide invaluable support, volunteers can ease the load and help make daily life more manageable.

By donating one hour per week, you’ll help create a more comfortable home environment and offer patients the practical assistance they need to continue living independently.

Onboarding requires a valid ID, TB testing, drug screening and a background check. Training is provided.

First Witness Child Advocacy Center is seeking a part-time volunteer who loves gardening and plants for the summer to help up-keep our garden.

Share the beauty and healing qualities of music with oncology patients at Essentia Health. Pianists are needed for brief, but regularly occurring volunteer shifts with a gorgeous view of Lake Superior. Our patients enjoy music from a variety of instruments that can provide calming and moderate volume music. We are proud to offer a baby grand piano for pianists.

Patients visit the Breast Center for annual mammograms as well as for treatments related to breast health. The Breast Health Volunteer is part of a team of caring individuals who welcome patients and support their care. The volunteer’s role is to greet patients, assist with registration, and then escort patients into the unit to prepare for their exam or procedure. Volunteer assistance is also needed with processing medical paperwork and calling for imaging reports.

Key Responsibilities

·         Provide support and reassurance to patients when appropriate.

Stone Soup is a pay-as-you-can cafe dedicated to increasing access to healthy food in the Chequamegon Bay. We are open on Thursdays 4-6pm, Fridays 11am-2pm, and Saturday 11am-2pm for nutritious community meals. Our space is also available for groups and meetings. Our priority is to welcome everyone, regardless of ability to pay!

Volunteers help our kitchen managers prep food on Thursdays and Fridays, help serve lunches on Saturdays either in the kitchen helping plate food and do dishes, or as a server who takes orders and delivers food. We also rely on volunteers to help with cleaning tasks, laundry, and to run certain errands like filling water jugs at the artesian well, and donating produce or foodstuffs from their own garden or pantry!

Be part of the team in our busy surgery department. Volunteers in the surgical family waiting room are the contact point for families waiting for loved ones in surgery, and can help with communication between staff and families, as well as provide a comforting environment.

Our Advisory Council which consists of a group of volunteer leaders who work in partnership with the Branch Executive Director to support the branch’s mission through volunteerism and fundraising. We’re looking for volunteers to join our Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC), where infants, toddlers, and preschoolers learn and grow through play year-round. Volunteers help support that learning by engaging with children—playing, talking, reading stories, and assisting during activities like mealtimes. By joining in, you’ll help spark curiosity, build connections, and encourage early learning in a fun, hands-on environment.

The Lake Superior YMCA is partnering with Laundry Love to support people experiencing homelessness or who are low income by helping provide access to free laundry services. Volunteers assist with check-in, directing guests to machines, starting loads, and offering friendly support while guests do their own laundry. This is a simple way to help meet a basic human need and build community.
When: 2nd Tuesday of the Month from 8:45-11:30 a.m.

Kid’s Club is a supervised play space for children ages 4 months to 9 years, and we’re looking for fun, caring volunteers to help keep it safe and full of smiles. Volunteers may read stories, hold and comfort babies, help with art projects, and join in games and activities with young children. This is a great role for someone who enjoys being playful, creative, and hands-on with kids. Minimum age to volunteer is 13.
Program Sites: Downtown Duluth YMCA and the YMCA at the Essentia Wellness Center (Hermantown)
Days & Times: Monday-Friday between 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday between 4:30-6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:45 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Each day we provide a meal for the 80 to 100 participants that come to our agency. During the school year, we begin serving meals at 3:30 and keep fresh food out until we close.

We do this because if a child is hungry the less focused they can be on their personal skill building projects.

The VYC wants to take the hunger out of their after school and summer day long times so that they can focus on having fun, learning positive behavior traits, and becoming aware of the need for a good education.

If you have experience in food preparation, cleaning, or would simply like to help serve healthy meals to youth within our community and have fun doing it, contact us and we can discuss your potential time commitment and availability!

The Valley Youth Center is in need of educational professionals with specialties in the areas of:

We are looking for these professionals to instruct and positively influence our youth participants in educational experiences and hobbies that can catch their interest and change their mind set of what school is/can be. Classes would be in the after school timeframe and/or during the summer days.

Facilitation can include similar projects or activities the students are participating in currently at school (i.e. more time than the school day allows for desired results from in-school teachers), unique projects that capture the attention of our youth, or tried and true projects.  

Class size can vary on instructor preference and behavior tolerance.

We are looking for positive adult role models to serve as academic helpers for K-8 students to complete assignments and be ready for the next school day. Approved mentors are in a supervised setting to help with homework or other academic activities, as well as provide a consistent source of emotional and social support for our clients. Please note, the academic needs are not an agency mandate but rather self-help and teacher-referrals. Meaning some days our homework helping needs are many and other days they are few(er).

Key Responsibilities

·         Report to the Charge Nurse for special instructions

·         Visit and provide support to patients when appropriate. 

·         Introduce yourself to staff and patients on the unit and ask them if you can help in any way.

·         Restock, sanitize, deliver mail, etc.

·         Observe hospital safety policies and procedures

·         Relay observations concerning patients and families to staff

·         Always respect patient confidentiality

Therapy animal visits have a tremendous impact on patients, families, and staff. Essentia Health facilities in Duluth and Superior would love to have more therapy animal teams join us!

Therapy animals must be certified by Alliance for Therapy Dogs, Pet Partners, or Therapy Dogs International.

Grandma's Marathon began in 1977 when a group of local runners planned a scenic road race from Two Harbors to Duluth, Minnesota. There were just 150 participants that year, but organizers knew they had discovered something special. Grandma's Marathon, Inc., is now a self-governed non-profit organization with an active board of directors. Grandma's Marathon draws more than 18,000 participants for its three-race event each June. It also hosts several other running events throughout the year in support of the Young Athletes Foundation - the organization's philanthropic arm - and to be a continued leader in Duluth's healthy running culture.

LAKE SUPERIOR YMCA
Responsible to: Branch Executive Director

SUMMARY
The Branch Advisory Council is a group of volunteer leaders who work in partnership with the Branch Executive Director to support the branch’s mission through volunteerism and fundraising. Council members champion the annual campaign, assist with fundraising efforts, volunteer at branch and community events, and help recruit and engage new volunteers, all while advancing YMCA values and strengthening community connections.

1. Actively support the achievement of branch goals.
2. Participate in committees and task forces as needed.
3. Within Association guidelines, support fundraising efforts required for financial stability and growth of the Branch and Association.
4. Assists with recruiting volunteers with clearly defined responsibilities related to Branch annual goal achievement.
5. Prepare and collaborate in meaningful committee meetings.
6. Positively promotes the mission and purpose of the YMCA in the community.

The Community Mobile Market is a grocery store on wheels that brings fresh produce, pantry staples, and more to communities around Duluth that have limited access to fresh food.

General volunteer opportunities may include helping our team clean, organize, and prepare for the mobile market.

Mobile market or grocery giveaway volunteering will include helping set up, packing pre-orders, restocking products, directing shopper traffic, and answering customer questions. This event is commonly noisy and busy.

Calling all Registered Nurses, Medical Doctors, Physician Assistants or anyone who is a Licensed Prescriber!

Camp Miller relies on medical workers to provide basic health care on-site during the summer camp season. Volunteers typically sign-up for one week during the summer.  Benefits include:

In consultation with the Marketing Team, you would be designing and producing posters and flyers announcing the YMCA’s programs and services. If you like to pop in a podcast and get down to work, this is the gig for you! You can make a big difference at the Y with assisting us with random projects! Duties may include things like wiping dust from surfaces, laminating materials, office work projects and organizing storage spaces. Minimum age to volunteer is 16.
