Looking for a volunteer opportunity that is truly rewarding? We need volunteers to help bring in donations and sort through them and place the items on hangers for the Free Store. We have hundreds of guests that visit the Free Store a week looking for clothes, household items, blankets, etc. Because of your gift of time, we are able to provide this service to the community at no charge. 

Lincoln Park Children and Families Collaborative is looking for new Board members who have general experience with serving on a board. We are looking for people who have experience as a lawyer, accountant, early childhood, social work, and development. Lincoln Park residents are preferred, but not required. We are looking for board members interested in supporting area teachers and students while reducing donations to the landfill. Specifically, we need people who are involved and connected to businesses and organizations interested in reducing waste. Other areas we desire are small business owners, people active in civic groups, and those with connections to area schools.

Companies to Classrooms Duluth is a unique nonprofit that addresses two important community issues. We collect unneeded items, many headed for the landfill, from businesses and individuals. These items are displayed in a store where teachers are invited to shop for free once a month, during the school year.

The Companies to Classrooms board is an active, engaged board that meetson the second Thursday of the month from noon to 1:30 p.m. . Currently, all meetings are through Webex.

Lake Superior Community Health Center (LSCHC) seeks 2-3 new members to join our Board of Directors. LSCHC is governed by a volunteer board, the majority of which are also patients at our clinics. As a Federally Qualified Health Care Center, LSCHC receives funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). In order to best serve our community and understand patient experience, it is the belief of HRSA and LSCHC that the Board of Directors should be reflective of the clinic’s patient panel. In order for LSCHC to meet this goal, we are currently seeking males between the ages of 18 – 64 to join our Board. In addition, we are seeking applicants with experience in the following areas:

The Make-A-Wish mission is 'together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses'. 

Wish Granters work in teams of two alongside Make-A-Wish staff to ensure every eligible child’s wish comes true. Wish Granters meet with the Wish Child and their family to discover the child’s wish, plan special 'Wish Boosts' during the wish journey, and present the wish to the child and their family once it has come true.

Camp for an extended period to really explore a particular park and area of the state while helping others enjoy the great outdoors.

Campground hosts ensure campers enjoy their stay and set an example as a model camper, practicing good housekeeping and follow all park rules. Hosts stay in the campground typically for a month or more and volunteer at least three hours a day, five days per week. A campsite is included for the duration of service. Amenities vary at each campground, inquire with the property manager. Equestrian campgrounds are especially in need of hosts, that have a horse in residence, to assist campers and monitor the campgrounds.    

Nature Center hosts greet and assist visitors during hours of operation and help with nature center programming, gift shop service, exhibit maintenance and upkeep. Most positions require a one-month commitment. Limited locations include a campsite for the duration of service.

Join others in a Friends Group and help support your favorite park, trail, forest, or recreation area for a single event or throughout the year.

A Friends Group is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose members have an interest in Wisconsin’s natural resources and volunteer their time, services and support to enhance Wisconsin's state parks, forests, trails and recreation areas. They provide direct support to individual properties.

Every year Friends Groups provide thousands of volunteer hours to help support the mission and activities at Wisconsin State Park System properties. Friends Group members:

Help With Community Awareness and Advocacy

Community Advisory Board members help to advance the goal of creating and sustaining homes for all. Board meetings are a unique opportunity to connect with CommonBond staff, residents, and other community members to learn firsthand about the successes and challenges our housing communities are facing.

As a board member you will review the financial audit for a housing community and attend the annual meeting, scheduled between April and September during regular business hours, for a one hour meeting. We are looking for volunteers with finance or board service experience but anyone with an interest in board service or affordable housing is encouraged to apply. Harbor House Crisis Shelters' (HHCS) mission is to provide hospitable shelter, transitional living and services for homeless women and families.  Our goal is to assist our guests in attaining housing.

HHCS relies on caring volunteers to assist in sorting donations, maintenance, repairs, mailings, lawn/garden care and cleaning.

HHCS also depends on the generosity of our supporters for donations, both monetary and in-kind supplies.  Your help makes a difference in the lives of homeless women and children!

Volunteering can range from a few hours playing a game and/or doing crafts with the children to helping the shelters go through and organize donations to well needed (and very thankful!) help with repairs at either of our two shelter locations in Superior or our Transitional Living Center.

The Red Cross response is a team effort and Disaster Dispatch is the vital link between the Red Cross and local first responders. Working remotely from home, volunteers collect the necessary information and activate the Red Cross response.

DAT Duty Officers are the lynchpin that holds a Red Cross disaster response together. DAT

Duty Officers receive notification from clients and agencies requesting assistance during a fire,
flood, or other disaster. They assess the situation and deploy the most appropriate resources to
support efforts such as initial casework and recovery planning, canteen services, sheltering, and
disaster assessment.

The Duty Officer ensures the response team has the tools, knowledge, and resources they
need in order to deliver quality services, all while monitoring the situation and providing support
from the comfort of their own home.

HOSPICE HOUNDS volunteers are a registered* therapy animal and their human teammate provide a calming, friendly presence, and are known to reduce stress and anxiety. 

If you have a furry friend that brings joy everywhere you go, this is the position for you! If your pet is already registered through a pet therapy program, you can apply immediately to become an Ecumen Hospice Hounds team volunteer. While dogs are the most common animal to join our Hospice Hounds teams, we are open to all therapy pets!

VIGIL VOLUNTEERS offer comfort and support tailored to a patient’s needs in the final days and hours. Vigil volunteers also offer respite to caregivers, giving them peace of mind that someone is present while they are unable to be by their loved one’s side. Vigil volunteers may be present at time of death.  

Vigil volunteers serve on an on-call, as-needed basis (agreeing to be on our call list when needs arise, but not required to agree to every vigil visit we ask about). Typically 2-6 hours per vigil visit.

Assist in delivery of a variety of programs and activities provided in specific program areas. Provide guidance and role modeling to club members.

This volunteer opportunity provides the chance to work with youth ages 6-18  to assist them in their academic development and development of character.

We need adults with experience using recording studio equipment, to help us run a music program for teenagers in our Club. We have Apple recording equipment, guitars, piano and drums. Someone with musical experience or technical experience, would be a great asset to our program. Also someone who is comfortable teaching their knowledge of this equipment to staff and teenage Club members, would be appreciated.

Just Kids Dental's Smile Drive campaign mobilizes volunteers across the Head of the Lakes United Way's service area to collect toothbrushes (for ages 0-18), travel and full size fluoridated toothpaste, dental flossers, and stickers and pencils (a fun prize) for low-income uninsured and underinsured children in our communities.

Now more than ever, kids need to practice good dental hygiene to prevent the spread of germs and protect their smiles from dental disease. How can they when they don't have the "magic wand" that eradicates tooth decay-a toothbrush of their own?

Duties include:

URGENT NEED: What many of us think of as simple tasks may be a challenge for those in the aging community. Basic housekeeping, vacuuming, dusting a ceiling fan, or carrying a laundry basket may not always get done with physical challenges.

However, with a bit of time from a volunteer, our older friends and neighbors are able to comfortably remain in their own home living independently, healthy, and happy!

Support Group Facilitators create a safe, open environment where people share their feelings, thoughts and experiences in a combined effort to better cope with and manage the shared problems of dementia.

KEY ACTIVITIES:
Facilitate groups of caregivers or people living with dementia to provide social and educational support helping group members provide emotional support to one another.
Present pertinent Association materials and information to group members and assure a positive experience for attendees.

The Walk to End Alzheimer's would not be possible without the support of volunteers. Specifically, Walk Committee members can get involved in a wide variety of projects related to special event planning and management.  Examples of projects include sponsor recruitment, team recruitment, team retention, marketing and outreach, and logistics.

The mission of the Alzheimer’s Association is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

We host monthly food and hygiene item giveaway events. We are looking for donations of toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, sanitary products, etc.

This Committee is responsible for fundraising oversight and planning. This includes:
1. Meeting annually with the Finance Committee to develop a balanced budget that
includes income and expense to present to the Board.
2. Developing and monitoring an annual funding plan with the Executive Director.
3. Participating and supporting the staff and Board in fundraising activities.
4. Identifying new fundraising ideas, opportunities, and connections.
5. Developing a plan to increase the cash reserve fund.

A fundraising/special event volunteer...

Do you have a reliable used car you would like to donate to LPCFC to support our programming? We are looking for a vehicle that could fit up to 6 people to transport children and families to and from our programming. This would include bringing children and parents to and from Supported Family Time, taking our LPCFC ChildCare children on field trips, and hauling supplies to maintain the community gardens at Harrison Park. Obtaining a vehicle would reduce the barrier that our clients face to attend our programming. 

Support CASDA's mission by participating in storage room organization/upkeep, donation sorting, office filing and shredding, light cleaning, etc.

*Please note that all volunteer candidates will go through a screening and training process, which can take 2-4 weeks (timeframe partly dependent on anticipated role(s)/assignments).

Lack of safe, reliable transportation is a significant barrier for many victims and survivors of abuse who are moving forward to an abuse-free life. CASDA transportation volunteers use their personal vehicle to help clients access goal-related appointments, such as those related to securing housing, education, employment or medical care. Transportation volunteers are utilized on an as-needed basis. Mileage is reimbursed.

Provide childcare for clients during weekly support group meetings, trauma-informed yoga sessions, and other scheduled client activities. Provide childcare on an on-call basis to give clients time and space for goal-oriented meetings, as well as offer opportunities for respite. Because childcare needs fluctuate, volunteers may be re-directed to other agency tasks. 

Recurring shifts include Wednesday mornings, as well as Thursday early afternoon and evening. 

**To comply with CASDA's Child Abuse Prevention policy, a minimum of two childcare volunteers are needed per shift.

Help provide compassionate, knowledgeable support to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.  

Provide off-site advocacy services during non-business hours to victims of abuse seeking medical attention in Superior and the Twin Ports. Volunteer must have driver’s license, proof of insurance and own transportation. Reimbursement for mileage is available. CASDA full advocacy training required (approximately 40 hours, free, in-person training).

Fall 2021 Update: COVID vaccination and mask required for this position.

Support CASDA's mission by greeting clients and other visitors, accepting/sorting donations, preparing mailings, keeping the welcome center neat and completing additional projects requested by staff. With additional training, office volunteers may also answer calls on our help line.

Dive in our 27 foot deep tanks, hand feed 6 foot sturgeon, help keep our tanks clean.

Must be open water certified and have completed 10 open water dives, at least two of which are cold water dives.

Must commit to a 4 hour training session and at least 3 dives per year.

We pride ourselves on keeping the care receiver and volunteer safe and satisfied with our organization so there is a short volunteer application and basic background check to fill out before the fun can begin.  

Driving aging adults to and from medical appointments is more than just a ride. It means someone can get to the eye doctor safely, someone gets their cancer treatment, someone gets their blood sugar checked, or someone is able to pick up their prescriptions. It gives clients the peace of mind they need to concentrate on where they are going instead of how they are going to get there.

It's a simple and effective way to make a big difference in someone's life. Once a day, once a week this is flexible based on your schedule!

Making Equal Genders Awesome (M.E.G.A.), formally known as Boys Restorative Program (Boys Group) is looking for volunteers. MEGA is an in-school mentoring program that helps youth have a safe place to explore their identities, learn about healthy masculinity and the ways that toxic masculinity has caused harm. We also play tons of games to even the energy out! We talk about relevant topics like equality, gender  equity, community, boundaries, and becoming a leader in their school and in the world. We would love for you to come out, have some fun, grow with them and learn some cool aspects with the youth.

Hospice provides end-of-life care to patients and practical support to families in their own homes -- which could mean a private residence, an apartment building, an assisted living facility, or a skilled nursing home facility/nursing home. Well-trained hospice volunteers provide social and emotional support, respite, and comfort care in the patient's familiar surroundings. Hospice training is required.  Contact our office 218-786-4020 to schedule training and find out more about Hospice volunteer opportunities.

One benefit of Hospice is grief support is provide for 13 months after a patient dies. The volunteer makes periodic check-in calls to provide support and encouragement to a patient's family. Positive Energy Outdoors seeks enthusiastic volunteers to assist with daily sled dog and draft horse care and training at our site 15 miles north of Duluth near Island Lake. Duties include helping with care of animals (feeding, watering, scooping, etc.), grooming horses and brushing dogs, supervising dogs in play pens, helping with kennel projects and assisting with sled dog training using an ATV. Four hour volunteer shifts are available 7 days a week from 8 am - noon.  Teens 14 and older can volunteer without an adult. A minimum commitment of 1 shift per week is required for at least 1 month. Volunteers should not have allergies to dust, dogs or horses, be comfortable around large animals and loud noise (barking dogs) and need reliable transportation to reach our site (no public transportation is available).  For those interested in volunteering throughout the fall/winter season, PEO can train you to drive a dog sled for tours and programs.  Learning to drive a dog sled requires a weekly commitment for at least 3 months (December-March) and the appropriate physical and mental capabilities to manage a sled dog team on your own.  Afternoon shifts are available in the winter, and other schedules may be accommodated depending on volunteer and program needs.  

Adventure Club is an after school program run by Positive Energy Outdoors for children in grades K-3 that combines outdoor education and unstructured nature play for families who need full time or part time after school care for their children. The program runs Monday-Friday after school from 2:15-5:30 at Lowell Elementary School.  

Adventure Club volunteers assist the Adventure Club outdoor education staff in planning and running Adventure Club activities. Volunteers should be interested in outdoor education, environmental education, nature play, and elementary education.  Volunteers meet at Lowell Elementary School at 1 pm for a planning session with staff, and stay through the end of the program day at 6 pm, which includes a 30 minute staff and volunteer reflection time.  The majority of the programming with children will be spent outdoors. High quality clothing/footwear for playing outdoors in all weather conditions is required for all volunteers.  A clothing list is available upon request.

Children in the Adventure Club program play outdoors in hot, cold, wet, rainy, windy, snowy and muddy conditions, and volunteers will have the chance to see how a nature based after school program is run while improving their skills as an outdoor educator.  

Volunteers must pass a background check (ages 18 and older) and be willing to volunteer at least once a week for a minimum of 1 month.  Adventure Club volunteers must be least 14 years old.  

Adventure Club is a Positive Energy Outdoors program and is not affiliated with Lowell School or ISD 709.

YWCA Girl Power! is an after school/lunch program located out of six schools in the Duluth area. Our goal is to empower girls in grades 3-8 by providing high quality programming related to leadership development, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), community engagment, social justice, healthy relationships, academic support and much more. 

As a Wo-mentor, our volunteers gain skills working with at-risk youth. Wo-mentors build positive mentoring relationships while helping girls with activities, homework, reading, and/or other academics. 

It is our goal as YWCA Girl Power! staff to provide on going support to our wo-mentors during and (as needed) outside of programming. We are available at all times during programming for guidance and questions. We also provide additional informal trainings, and offer communications via email and/or text messaging throughout the week.

Being a Woman of the Week means having the chance to share your passion with young girls in our community. Girl Power! is located out of six elementary and/or middle schools in Duluth. We work to carry out the YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism, empowering women and girls, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.  Our activities revolve around leadership development,  STEM (science technology engineering math), self esteem building, healthy relationships, community engagement, race and gender justice, and more!

Women of the Week are a very important part of our program because it provides our girls with new examples of strong female role models. Below are some questions that you may choose to answer as a Woman of the Week:

We have found that Women of the Week are most successful when our visitor can lead an activity or interactive discussion related to her field or passion. We have had Women of the Week do activities related to body image (health and wellness educator), science experiments (scientist), business planning (entrepreneur), and lead writing activities (professor). Anything that encourages girls to get engaged is great. If you would like help coming up with an idea for an activity we would be more than happy to brainstorm with you!

Each school consists of a group of  about 10-20 girls in 3rd-5th grade, or 6th-8th grade. Many different days and times are available and we are happy to work with you to find the site(s) that fit best with your scheduel. 

Our next big event will be Kaleidoscope, held at UW-Superior on April 30th. 

Overview: Got an extra hand to lend? A little spare time for those ‘every once in a while’ occasions? Help the library out at our Special Events and Programs!  Opportunities to participate in one-time opportunities exist at West Duluth, Downtown and Mt. Royal (when it re-opens).

Goal of Position: To have an enthusiastic and friendly pool of volunteers that can assist in the organization, preparing, and carrying out of special event, projects and activities for and at the Library.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Please note: While most events will be indoors, some may be outdoors. For indoor events, volunteer will work inside and be protected from weather conditions; working in a clean, well-ventilated, and well-lighted environment. Outdoor events include exposure to seasonal weather conditions.

Time Commitment: No minimum time commitment.  Volunteers can do as many events a year as they are available.  Each event will vary in time commitment (averaging 2-4 hours long), but all will be during regular Library hours. Many of our Special Events are on evenings and weekends. 

Qualifications:

Training/Orientation: Any necessary orientation and training will be provided on the day of the event. 

Get the ultimate insider experience at Great Lakes Aquarium!  A great chance to have a fun, educational and fulfilling time. Attend an orientation session, pick your favorite part of the Aqaurium, review a packet of information, participate in a short training, and answer questions from our visitors out on our exhibit floor.

Do you love to dance, thrive on excitement, have a lot of energy, and dream of performing before a crowd? We have the perfect volunteer opportunity at Great Lakes Aquarium. Join us as one of our Otter Mascots- and have fun performing at area events such as mascot races, sports events, parades, and special events here at the Aquarium.

The Lighthouse Center for Vision Loss hosts a local station as part of a statewide radio service offered through the St. Paul-based Minnesota State Services for the Blind. The service equips individuals with special radios that broadcast news from across the state, as well as book readings and more.

From the radio room at the Lighthouse, volunteers read local articles from the Duluth News Tribune and other regional newspapers. The TPNA radio broadcasts over a special radio frequency and is utilized by hundreds of Northlanders with low vision or blindness. Special radios are available free of charge from State Services for the Blind as part of its Radio Talking Book network.

Each volunteer typically reads once or twice a month from 8 am until 11 am, along with a co-reader for that day. Teams of readers share responsibility for one day of the week under direction of a volunteer day captain.

These volunteers support a variety of activities in the Solvay Hospice House including meal preparation and serving, hosting/greeting, music, laundry, visiting with patients or families, and sitting with restless or dying patients (11th Hour Program). Hospice training is required, which is offered every spring and fall. Contact our office to inquire about the next training opportunity. Additional training options are available for college students. 

Do you have a couple hours a week to "Pay It Forward"??? ICAA is looking for volunteers to help pack food bags for our Food Pantry and sort clothing for our Thrift Store. We serve approximately 350-400 families per month in our Food Pantry and the proceeds of our Thrift Store help fund the pantry. Additional Requirements: There is some lifting and bending involved but all you really need is a little available time.

Volunteers are needed in all departments of our agency. Food Pantry: packaging food and helping clients. Our pantry serves approximately 400 families per month. Donations: Sorting and cleaning donations and helping customers. Thrift Store: Pricing items and maintaining the appearance of the store. Clothing Dept: Sorting and pricing clothing for re-sale. Additional Requirements: Volunteers are required to fill out a volunteer form and background checks are performed by our agency. Confidentiality statement is required to be signed by all volunteers. Lifting is involved with some positions.

Assist aging individuals living at home with simple repairs and maintenance that they wouldn't otherwise be able to do on their own or hire out due to restricted finances. Duties may include tightening leaky faucets, changing smoke detectors and light bulbs, weatherizing doors and windows, etc. If you don't know exactly how to fix something we have a team of fix-it guys and gals that can help you out.

Caregivers are all heroes, but even heroes need a break sometimes. By providing short-term care in their place, you allow them to tend to their own needs for a change. You will assist taking care of the aging individual in their absence. You do not need specialized training, and you won't be asked to help assist with personal hygiene like using the toilet or bathing. Looking for a volunteer who will: Greet customers, ring up purchases on cash register, be able to make change in our BHC lobby gift shop. One 3 hour shift per week, or fill in as needed.
