As a Minnesota Aging Pathways volunteer, you will learn new skills, meet new people, gain a greater sense of purpose, and much more - all while giving back to your community. 

You can volunteer locally and do community outreach, help people with Medicare, help people complete forms and applications, or give educational presentations. 

Once you complete a successful background check and training, you’ll receive a certification as a State Health Insurance & Assistance Program (SHIP) counselor. After that, you will continue to receive ongoing support, guidance, and training.

Help create a “home-like” environment for the people we serve by assisting with serving the evening meal. You’ll provide basic dignity to survivors by providing them with comfort and nourishment while also following food safety guidelines.

Key Responsibilities: The Shelter works with a food service to provide meals for shelter residents. Volunteers will help prep the kitchen, serve food, and clean up after the meal. Volunteers will be working alongside Safe Haven advocate staff during this task.

Impact of the Assignment: You will help create a safe place for individuals to heal. Having a volunteer to help with serving meals allows more one on one time with the advocates and individuals we serve.

Time Commitment: 1 day over the week, 4:30-6:30pm. We are also flexible to those who want to volunteer on a bi-weekly or monthly basis.

Training: Volunteers in this position will go through Safe Haven’s basic Domestic Violence 101 Training. Volunteers will then shadow current staff and volunteers to learn the basic tasks of the position.

We’re looking for volunteers who enjoy tinkering with things and working on maintenance projects. Come with experience or an interest in learning from our Maintenance Team. Volunteers have an opportunity to work with everything from landscaping and painting to building maintenance. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to learn life-long skills like how to use tools, grounds work and maintaining equipment. Minimum age to volunteer is 15.

VITA volunteers are up to the challenge of learning the ins and outs of tax preparation, enjoy puzzling out tax problems collaboratively, and work hard to support our clients in tax filing. Volunteers can serve as Greeters or Tax Preparers and are asked to commit to:

- participation in virtual training offered starting in November with Greeters having a total of 3-5 hours of content and Tax Preparers having a total of 15-20 hours. Set your own pace and support is readily available.

Purpose

By transporting blood donations and supplies, Blood Transport Drivers ensure patients receive the care they need without delay. Your time and care form the lifesaving connection between blood donors and recipients in the Northland.

Key Responsibilities

·         Drive blood donations and supplies safely between donor centers, bloodmobiles, hospitals, and partner sites

·         Lift and move boxes, coolers and supplies (dollies provided for heavier loads)

·         Follow simple safety steps to keep donations secure (training provided)

·         Stay in touch with staff if schedules or road conditions change

·         Represent Memorial Blood Centers with kindness and care

What We’re Looking For

·         A safe and steady driver with a good driving record

·         Someone comfortable lifting and moving supplies,coolers and boxes (25 lbs. at the heaviest, training and equipment provided)

·         Someone reliable with schedules and commitments

·         A caring communicator who enjoys short, simple check-ins withhospital and blood center staff

Impact

Every delivery you make ensures blood donations reach patients on time, saving lives in the Northland.

An hour of your time can put on average $2000 into the hands of a person experiencing poverty. Join our volunteer community this January-April to help low-income community members receive free tax filing assistance. Volunteer from home or in-person, your choice. 

Have experience filing taxes or willing to learn? Tax Preparers work closely with clients (from home or in-person) to understand their situation, offer tax knowledge, and prepare taxes. Even if you have no desire to file taxes our site has multiple office communication opportunities.

CORE Community Resources is looking for an organizer for helping to keep track of the durable medical equipment that is lent out to the community. Carefully look over and clean equipment to ensure it is in good working order and ready for the next user.  Maintain inventory list of all equipment. Communicate any needed repairs, replacements, or disposal of all equipment.

Community Action Duluth offers driving help for those who have their permit and are trying to get their driver's license. We have a volunteer who meets people once a week at our office and drives with them for an hour, using his vehicle. When the participant is ready to take their test, they use the volunteer's vehicle for the test as well.

We are looking for more volunteers to fill this role, as our waiting list for this program is very long and our current volunteer can only work with a few people at a time.

We are an upscale thrift shop staffed by volunteers. Proceeds from the Shelter Shop go to support the Chequamegon Humane Association.

Today’s teachers receive very little money to spend on supplies to enhance the learning experience. Consequently, many teachers spend their own money (as much as $800 a year) for basic needs such as paper, glue sticks, art supplies and more.

Companies to Classrooms Duluth addresses this problem in a unique way. Donations of excess supplies from local businesses and individuals are collected and displayed in a “free store” for teachers.  You can help us by organizing a supply drive or dropping off any of the items form the list below:

The Bob Tavani House for Medical Respite in Duluth provides a safe place for individuals experiencing homelessness to recover after a hospital stay. We offer a comfortable environment with private rooms, nutritious meals, and caring staff.

But we need your help!

Volunteer to cook dinner at the Bob Tavani House*! You pick the day – once a month or more often if you'd like. Dinners typically serve 5 to 7 individuals. We provide supplies and training. We appreciate those who can make a regular commitment to our residents. You don't need to be a chef, just someone who cares about making a difference in the lives of vulnerable people.

As a member, you will help enhance long-term education equity outcomes through teaching and increasing interpersonal skills and social competencies in students grades K-8. Members are placed a youth-serving agencies including schools, non-profit organizations, and out-of-school time programs in St. Louis, Cook, and Lake County. Members facilitate interventions to help build positive relationships, provide academic enrichment, and teach individualized skill building with students that have been identified as needing extra support. You will help expand the capacity of site staff to support varying needs identified in students. 

Members receive a monthly living stipend of up to $2,600/month as well as an education award upon successful completion of the program. There are also insurance benefits and childcare assistance available to full time members.

Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault (PAVSA) is a non-profit sexual violence crisis center in southern Saint Louis County, MN that provides free and confidential services to victim-survivors, their family, and friends ages 13 and up. PAVSA’s vision is the elimination of sexual violence in southern Saint Louis County. Our mission is supporting victim-survivors and their family and friends, educating and building awareness in the community, and advocating for social change in the systems that interact with victim-survivors. Work Projects at Camp Miller

A full day of FEEL GOOD labor!  Between 340 acres and about 35 structures, we have an endless amount of work projects at camp.  We can find a project to fit all ages and ability levels-from the littlest litter-picker-uppers to skilled carpenters.  We have something for everyone!  A great opportunity for college student organizations, families, scout or 4H groups, adult service clubs, companies, church groups and more! 

Age Requirements: Most projects can accommodate various ages including youth.

When:We are really flexible and will find a date and time that works best for your group.

Where:YMCA Camp Miller, Sturgeon Lake, MN Camp Miller is located about 45 minutes south of Duluth.

Drop In Respite. Taking care of a loved one takes a massive toll on the caregiver. Help them be able to get some quality respite care ensuring their loved ones are safe, well cared for, and are enjoying their time with others. Help with snacks, meal assistance, conversation, games, and puzzles. The effect you can have on your neighbor’s lives is endless. Sites will be in Ashland, Washburn, and Cable. 

Come out to Washburn to help maintain the school district’s existing school gardens that include a vegetable garden, orchard, bioswale, butterfly garden, habitat field, high tunnel, school forest, and aquaponics lab on the grounds of the Washburn School District. Volunteers will work the full-time district garden caretaker in all parts of care of this area.  From mowing, weeding, trimming, building raised beds, mulching, planning, planting, maintaining, and harvesting vegetable, trees, and native plantings.  Get your hands dirty to help continue to provide this important resource for the school staff, students, and community. 

Volunteer Pet Support Coordinator, it’s Meals on Wheels for pets. Help support the very loved pets of our Meals on Wheels community by ensuring their needs are met also. Help build network relationships and raise awareness in the community to bring in food, supplies, and other donation needs for these beloved pets.

The Duluth River Train/Lake Superior Mississippi Railroad depends on volunteers to operate its train rides along the St. Louis River as well as maintain the track and rolling stock. We offer volunteer opportunities for all abilities and interests:  Train Crew, Car Hosts, Ticket Agents, Narrator, Track Work, Marketing, Restoration, Repair and Mechanical.

Provide transportation for folks 55+ to appointments in the Two Harbors and Duluth areas.  Most rides originate from Two Harbors.  Rides may be for medical, dental, vision, and mental health appointments happening Mondays - Fridays between 8am and 5pm.  We offer drivers fuel cards to help offset the fuel cost.  Drivers must be over 21, have a clean, reliable vehicle that is currently insured.  All volunteers will need to fill out an application that does include a limited background check.

The DECC is partnering with the YMCA and other non-profits on a volunteer opportunity in exchange for a monetary donation to the non-profit of their choosing. Opportunities include assisting staff in concessions, ushering, ticket taking, helping at the bars, greeting guests, etc. Shifts are typically 4-6 hours long and events range from hockey games, concerts, comedy shows, etc. Grab a friend and create a lasting experience for a great cause! The monetary donation the Y receives will go directly towards the Y’s Annual Support Campaign.

Founded in 2002, the Superior Rivers Watershed Association is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Ashland, Wisconsin which engages watershed citizens as stewards of our clean water resources. We work to promote and protect clean water resources in Wisconsin’s Lake Superior basin. We envision a future where citizens are stewards of their watershed.

Support our work by joining our Fundraising Committee.  The committee plans how we will achieve our donation goals and then puts these plans into action.  Activities may include fundraising events, mailing campaigns, merchandise sales, talking one-on-one to businesses, and more. We have regularly scheduled meetings on the last Tuesday evening of each month but frequently come together between those scheduled meetings to get the work done.

Founded in 2002, the Superior Rivers Watershed Association is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Ashland, Wisconsin which engages watershed citizens as stewards of our clean water resources. We work to promote and protect clean water resources in Wisconsin’s Lake Superior basin. We envision a future where citizens are stewards of their watershed.

Support our work by participating in a fieldwork day in the Spring or Fall.  Visit a stream site to collect aquatic macroinvertebrates (aquatic bugs like dragonfly and mayfly larvae). All training and equipment provided.  Respond to this volunteer need now to get your training scheduled before our next fieldwork day.

A great opportunity for a student org who isn’t able to volunteer in person but would still like to contribute!  We have a children’s book shelf at the Y that can never have enough books.  We collect gently used books for kids ages infant-teen.  Book Drives can be held any time of year and are an easy way to give back while making a huge difference in a child’s life.   

Help adults living with a disability experience the benefits of yoga by practicing mind-body concepts and practical exercises. Volunteers help participants experience a variety of yoga poses by adapting the poses to the participant’s abilities. All classes are taught by certified adaptive yoga instructors through True North Adaptive Yoga, a partnership with Northland Adaptive Recreation, Miller Dwan Foundation, and the College of St. Scholastica. Each class also includes an intentional social/community focus to foster relationships and fun.

Adapted swimming lessons are led by a certified YMCA swimming instructor, with volunteers working one-on-one with children to help improve their swimming skills, learn water safety, and have a fun, social experience with their peers and other volunteers. These all make us think of my head hurting.  But if you want to make a difference to the future, being a zoning facilitator may be your opportunity.  Bayfield County is looking for that person to walk through the process of updating the zoning code.  Experience needed in meeting facilitation. An understanding of zoning and housing preferred. Take what you have learned and give it forward to the next generation.

Aspirus St. Luke's Hospice is looking for volunteers to help provide haircuts for Hospice patients who are unable to transport out for a haircut. Volunteers are as needed and utilized to cut, and on occasion, style hair at patient's bedsides according to their needs.

Our virtual visit program matches 2-3 young adult college students with senior citizens for virtual video visits. These seniors have been suffering from isolation, and you could really brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide training about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well as additional support throughout your service. Since these visits are virtual, you can do it without any travel. This is both convenient, and allows more of your time to be spent volunteering, rather than commuting to the volunteering location. We provide this program free of charge to seniors across the country, and have volunteer from around the country as well.

Typically, students volunteer one hour per week. Each call lasts up to one hour, based on the senior's attention span and mood on each day. We expect students to volunteer for at least 16 weeks, so that they can build a friendship with the senior. This does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new seniors starting all the time, and train new volunteers weekly. The students are matched based on the times that they're available, with a senior who is available at the same time, and they will have a regular, weekly appointment for their visit. Students wishing for more visits or other opportunities that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with different ways to volunteer, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, or outreach.

Adaptive Archery Volunteer (6-8 wks/session, offered Spring and Fall)

Mondays, 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Chalstrom’s Indoor Archery Center on Rice Lake Road. Volunteers work one-on-one or in small groups with youth and adult participants to assist/teach the fundamentals of archery and range safety. Basic archery experience preferred, but not required. Volunteer orientation is on Monday, Sept. 19, week prior to program start, 5:30pm.

Our mobile food pantries are like food shelves on wheels.  Fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy, baked goods, and shelf stable items are loaded onto our refrigerated truck to transport to areas of high need and low food resources.

Once on site, pallets of nutritious food are unloaded and set up in a farmer’s market style.  Individuals and families arrive, they’re registered by volunteers, and food is placed into their vehicles.  

We are looking for volunteers to help distribute food at our mobile food pantry in Cloquet, which is scheduled on the third Thursday of each month. This is an outdoor activity. 

Volunteers must be able to stand, lift and bend.

The Mentor North Board of Directors provides overall leadership and strategic direction for Mentor North. The vision of the Mentor North board is to have ⅓ constituents (families/mentors), ⅓ business representation, and ⅓ stakeholders (youth serving agencies, educators, etc.). We are looking for individuals with a broad spectrum of talents including (but not limited to) program management, youth development, marketing, fundraising, legal guidance, event planning and understanding of the needs and realities of the youth and families we serve. Board members are not required to have formal background in these areas; we are seeking a diverse group of individuals who can make active contributions to the organization.

Board terms are three years, and board service requires four to six hours per month (including a monthly meeting) depending on current projects.

Expectations for Board members:

Regularly attend board meetings and important related meetings

Make a commitment to participate actively in board/committee work, participating in at least one Mentor North committee

Volunteer for and willingly accept assignments and complete them thoroughly and on time

Stay informed about board/committee matters, prepare well for meetings and review and comment on minutes and reports

Actively recruit and engage with board/committee members, get to know other members and build a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus

Participate in the board’s annual evaluation and planning efforts

• Loading up food in company vehicle to deliver to outlet site pantries

Volunteer to keep those doors open by manning the information desk, be a clerk in the museum store or work to provided income to keep the lights on and the people coming in.  Background checks are required of all volunteers. Help to fulfill a critical need by delivering meals to the homebound through the Meals on Wheels program.  One-hour routes for delivery around Ashland and Ashland County.  Training provided in how to hand out meals, what to watch for with clients, and interacting with them.

The Duluth Community Garden Program (DCGP) is looking for volunteers to join our Board of Directors. The DCGP board is made up of an active group of community members committed to land access and food justice, we would love to have more members in our mix!

Looking for a volunteer opportunity that is truly rewarding? We need volunteers to help bring in donations and sort through them and place the items on hangers for the Free Store. We have hundreds of guests that visit the Free Store a week looking for clothes, household items, blankets, etc. Because of your gift of time, we are able to provide this service to the community at no charge. 

Lincoln Park Children and Families Collaborative is looking for new Board members who have general experience with serving on a board. We are looking for people who have experience as a lawyer, accountant, early childhood, social work, and development. Lincoln Park residents are preferred, but not required. We are looking for board members interested in supporting area teachers and students while reducing donations to the landfill. Specifically, we need people who are involved and connected to businesses and organizations interested in reducing waste. Other areas we desire are small business owners, people active in civic groups, and those with connections to area schools.

Companies to Classrooms Duluth is a unique nonprofit that addresses two important community issues. We collect unneeded items, many headed for the landfill, from businesses and individuals. These items are displayed in a store where teachers are invited to shop for free once a month, during the school year.

The Companies to Classrooms board is an active, engaged board that meetson the second Thursday of the month from noon to 1:30 p.m. . Currently, all meetings are through Webex.

Lake Superior Community Health Center (LSCHC) seeks 2-3 new members to join our Board of Directors. LSCHC is governed by a volunteer board, the majority of which are also patients at our clinics. As a Federally Qualified Health Care Center, LSCHC receives funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). In order to best serve our community and understand patient experience, it is the belief of HRSA and LSCHC that the Board of Directors should be reflective of the clinic’s patient panel. In order for LSCHC to meet this goal, we are currently seeking males between the ages of 18 – 64 to join our Board. In addition, we are seeking applicants with experience in the following areas:

The Make-A-Wish mission is 'together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses'. 

Wish Granters work in teams of two alongside Make-A-Wish staff to ensure every eligible child’s wish comes true. Wish Granters meet with the Wish Child and their family to discover the child’s wish, plan special 'Wish Boosts' during the wish journey, and present the wish to the child and their family once it has come true.

Camp for an extended period to really explore a particular park and area of the state while helping others enjoy the great outdoors.

Campground hosts ensure campers enjoy their stay and set an example as a model camper, practicing good housekeeping and follow all park rules. Hosts stay in the campground typically for a month or more and volunteer at least three hours a day, five days per week. A campsite is included for the duration of service. Amenities vary at each campground, inquire with the property manager. Equestrian campgrounds are especially in need of hosts, that have a horse in residence, to assist campers and monitor the campgrounds.    

Nature Center hosts greet and assist visitors during hours of operation and help with nature center programming, gift shop service, exhibit maintenance and upkeep. Most positions require a one-month commitment. Limited locations include a campsite for the duration of service.

Join others in a Friends Group and help support your favorite park, trail, forest, or recreation area for a single event or throughout the year.

A Friends Group is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose members have an interest in Wisconsin’s natural resources and volunteer their time, services and support to enhance Wisconsin's state parks, forests, trails and recreation areas. They provide direct support to individual properties.

Every year Friends Groups provide thousands of volunteer hours to help support the mission and activities at Wisconsin State Park System properties. Friends Group members:

Join Study Buddies and be matched with a k-5th grade student to strengthen their academic skills while building a positive and lasting relationship.

We provide tailored curriculum and activities to structure your time with your buddy, as well as tutor trainings and on-site staff support, to ensure you have the tools you need to make a positive impact.

Volunteers meet with their buddies for 90 minutes weekly for the duration of a school-year.

Help With Community Awareness and Advocacy

Are you looking to learn more about the importance of affordable housing in your community? Do you have experience in finance or board service - or are you looking to gain leadership/board experience? Consider joining a Community Advisory Board.

Community Advisory Board members help to advance the goal of creating and sustaining homes for all. Board meetings are a unique opportunity to connect with CommonBond staff, residents, and other community members to learn firsthand about the successes and challenges our housing communities are facing.

As a board member you will review the financial audit for a housing community and attend the annual meeting, scheduled between April and September during regular business hours, for a one hour meeting. We are looking for volunteers with finance or board service experience but anyone with an interest in board service or affordable housing is encouraged to apply. The enrollment process consists of an application and phone interview.

Harbor House Crisis Shelters' (HHCS) mission is to provide hospitable shelter, transitional living and services for homeless women and families.  Our goal is to assist our guests in attaining housing.

HHCS relies on caring volunteers to assist in sorting donations, maintenance, repairs, mailings, lawn/garden care and cleaning.

HHCS also depends on the generosity of our supporters for donations, both monetary and in-kind supplies.  Your help makes a difference in the lives of homeless women and children!

Volunteering can range from a few hours playing a game and/or doing crafts with the children to helping the shelters go through and organize donations to well needed (and very thankful!) help with repairs at either of our two shelter locations in Superior or our Transitional Living Center.
