Volunteer: Get involved in our community with volunteer opportunities at Stone Soup Cafe!

Stone Soup is a pay-as-you-can cafe dedicated to increasing access to healthy food in the Chequamegon Bay. We are open for lunch every Saturday and Sunday 11am-2pm for nutritious community meals. Our space is also available for groups and meetings. Our priority is to welcome everyone, regardless of ability to pay!

We also rely on volunteers to help with cleaning tasks, laundry, and run certain errands like filling water jugs from the artesian well, and donating produce or foodstuffs from their own garden or pantry!

Volunteer: Volunteer Helpline and Hospital Advocates

PAVSA is seeking volunteers to maintain our 24-hour advocacy services. We are dedicated to the elimination of sexual violence in southern Saint Louis County through supporting victims, educating the community, and advocating for change. Our volunteers are critical to supporting victim-survivors in our community. They assist with facilitating our helpline and provide advocacy in the hospital setting during overnight and weekend hours.

Volunteering with PAVSA is a great way to get involved in the community, cultivate your crisis intervention and de-escalation skills, and build knowledge of local resources. In accordance with the State of Minnesota, Statute 595.02, all volunteers must complete a 40-hour Sexual Assault Advocacy Training. PAVSA provides this training at no cost to you and will equip you with the skills you need to be a great advocate!

Right now, we are most in need of hospital volunteers.
Hospital volunteers are individuals who go to our local hospitals to provide comfort and advocacy when a survivor seeks care there after a sexual assault. Hospital advocates are accompanied by SANEs (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners) - nurses with specialized training in responding to sexual assaults.

Helpline volunteers are individuals who talk with survivors on our 24-hour helpline after office hours. They provide validation, support, and resources to survivors over the phone. Helpline volunteers are supported by a "staff backup," a PAVSA staff who is also on call and available to answer questions as they come up.

Upcoming Training Completing PAVSA's 40-Hour Training is required to volunteer, but it extends beyond PAVSA. It looks great on a resume, and can open up opportunities for further work in the nonprofit field. Completing the training now can also be great if you're considering interning at PAVSA in the future. Throughout training we cover a variety of topics such as active listening, harm reduction, crisis de-escalation, and more.

Our next training is scheduled for Fall 2025 Following an in person interview, training will be help via Zoom with midway check ins, hospital tours, and a hybrid final session. Sessions will be held September 2nd through October 2nd, Tuesday and Thursday nights from 4 to 7pm.

RequirementsAll PAVSA volunteers need access to a working phone, technology to access Zoom for training, availability to be on call during evening and weekend hours, and for hospital volunteers, reliable transportation.

For more information contact our Volunteer Coordinator Amanda at amanda@pavsa.org or complete our volunteer interest form here: https://forms.gle/RiBTjmkV8v5gocm7A

Volunteer: Visiting Companion for Friends & Co

Seeking Visiting Companion for Bob

Loneliness hurts our family and friends, fragments our neighborhoods, and erodes our own sense of purpose. But united, we can heal the loneliness and create more connected, resilient communities. Together, we can ensure no one faces loneliness alone, but instead finds belonging in the friendship we all deserve. We can make a difference one person at a time. Take Bob for instance who would love to find a Visiting Companion:

Bob is a delightful gentleman. He has a sparkling, friendly personality. He is easy to engage and has lots of interest, including Painting, watching westerns , and people in general and going places. He is willing and able physically to go outside of his home for say a scenic drive or for a friendly coffee and lunch. Occasionally, he may need a gentle nudge to keep his conversation on track or relevant, but Bob accepts redirection very well. Bob would prefer to be matched with a male companion.

If you would like to be Bob’s Visiting Companion, please call Emma at 612-746-0746 or email her at elucchesi@friendsco.org

Volunteer: Adaptive Ski & Snowboard Volunteer - Spirit Mountain, Duluth, MN

A volunteer opportunity for your active winter lifestyle Volunteer with Northland Adaptive Recreation Adaptive Ski & Snowboard

If you’re a winter enthusiast (or an aspiring one), you can make a huge difference in someone’s life and have a blast as an adaptive Ski or Snowboard volunteer.

You don’t need to be an expert, just willing to make new friends and help others. You’ll have fun, embrace winter, and help someone who has a disability discover (or re-discover) the exciting world of snow sports - an activity they probably never dreamed they could do.

Since 1979, Northland Adaptive RecreationSki & Snowboard has been bringing outdoor, people-loving individuals together to volunteer and make the slopes available to everyone.

Northland Adaptive Recreation is seeking skiers and snowboarders to join our team of over 300 northland volunteers and make the most of the winter months! We also have positions off the slopes including check-in and equipment assistants. You will receive training on adaptive equipment and techniques for teaching skiers and boarders with disabilities. No prior teaching experience necessary. New volunteers start out as Assistant Instructors and are paired with experienced volunteer instructors, with a typical ratio of 2-3 volunteers per student. Our participants range from 6 to 60+ years of age. You will receive complimentary lift tickets while volunteering, however you do need to provide your own equipment and helmet. Starting age to volunteer is 16 years old.

You’ll have fun, make new friends, and introduce someone with a disability to the exciting world of snow sports. Come join our fun group of people and get outside this winter!

Program runs January – early March
