About Head of the Lakes United Way:

HLUW proudly serves Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin communities including Ashland and Bayfield counties, Greater Duluth, Lake and Cook counties and Superior-Douglas county.  As a Head of the Lakes United Way (HLUW) Board Member, you’ll be part of a team of dedicated volunteers who want to better the future for all who live and work in our area.


Basics of Board Service with HLUW

Role of the Board

As the highest leadership body of the organization and to satisfy its fiduciary duties, the board is responsible for:

Determining the mission and purposes of HLUWSelecting and evaluating the performance of the PresidentStrategic and organizational planningEnsuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial managementFundraising and resource developmentApproving and monitoring HLUW’s programs and servicesEnhancing HLUW’s public image

The HLUW Board and Executive Director relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of all board members is both critical and expected.


Individual Board Member Qualifications

Individuals must embrace Head of the Lakes United Way’s commitment to serve all of our local communities through our three focus areas of Health, Education and Financial StabilityCandidates should have a commitment to equity and inclusion and to working towards eliminating barriers in our communitiesMay have leadership stature in business, government, education and/or philanthropy, and a track record of community leadershipBoard members will demonstrate skills that enable them to collaborate with and attract other well-qualified board membersCommitting to regular attendance and strong contribution to board meetingsServing as active HLUW advocates and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary Leveraging connections, networks, and resources that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standingGiving a meaningful personal financial donation

Volunteer: Head of the Lakes United Way: Community Impact Committee Members Needed!

Purpose: Head of the Lakes United Way (HLUW) Community Impact Committee members provide volunteer service for community projects throughout the year, oversee HLUW’s Community Investment Process (grantmaking), maintain relationships with community partners and support HLUW’s internal initiatives. As a member, you are an ambassador and advocate of United Way.

Responsibilities:

1. Serve as a volunteer for community projects identified by the committee.

2. Help plan and execute the following HLUW initiatives and events:

Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive National Volunteer Week Day of Caring

3. Oversee HLUW’s Community Investment Process

Review and recommend Community Investment Process materials including grant application, timelines and decision-making procedures. Help spread the word about funding opportunities. Assist in recruitment of community panelists to review and rate grant applications.

4. Be a community advocate and ambassador for Head of the Lakes United Way

Qualifications:

Must reside or work in one of HLUW’s service areas. Commitment to HLUW’s mission of striving to improve the health, education and financial stability of EVERY person in EVERY community we serve. Ability to work effectively within a team and engage with diverse stakeholders. Analytical and critical thinking skills for evaluating impact and making informed decisions. Passion for community service and the drive to create positive change. Knowledge of local community needs and resources a plus.

Commitment: Participate in at least 4 team volunteer projects throughout the year and Zoom meetings as outlined.
